CIENTO OCHENTA / PUEBLO
Las manifestaciones de octubre de 2019 hicieron resurgir la idea de Pueblo: un sentimiento de pertenencia colectiva sin distinciones de raza, género, religión o clase. Miles de personas, con motivaciones diversas, se unieron bajo una misma demanda: mayor justicia social y cambios frente a un sistema profundamente desigual.
En Santiago, la Plaza Baquedano —rebautizada Plaza de la Dignidad— se convirtió en el epicentro de ese encuentro y en un símbolo de unidad. El 25 de octubre, más de 1,2 millones de personas dieron vida a la llamada Marcha más grande de Chile, una de las expresiones más claras y potentes de este concepto compartido de Pueblo.
ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY / PEOPLE
The demonstrations in October 2019 revived the idea of the People: a sense of collective belonging without distinctions of race, gender, religion, or class. Thousands of people, with diverse motivations, united under a single demand: greater social justice and change in the face of a deeply unequal system.
In Santiago, Plaza Baquedano—renamed Plaza de la Dignidad (Dignity Square)— became the epicenter of this gathering and a symbol of unity. On October 25, more than 1.2 million people took part in what was called Chile's largest march, one of the clearest and most powerful expressions of this shared concept of the People.
A raíz de las masivas protestas, el transporte público quedó interrumpido durante varios días. Las barricadas y cortes de calles hicieron aún más complejo el acceso a los sectores céntricos, epicentro de las manifestaciones. En ese escenario, caminar o desplazarse en bicicleta se convirtió en la forma más común y eficiente de moverse por la ciudad.
As a result of the massive protests, public transportation was disrupted for several days. Barricades and roadblocks made access to downtown areas, the epicenter of the demonstrations, even more difficult. In this scenario, walking or cycling became the most common and efficient way to get around the city.
Como forma de protesta, los manifestantes golpean con piedras las planchas de acero que blindan el edificio de Telefónica, en las inmediaciones de la Plaza de la Dignidad. El estruendo es incesante y ensordecedor, pero en medio de ese ruido emerge un espacio de pausa: la contemplación de los cientos de mensajes escritos sobre la pared.
As a form of protest, demonstrators hit stones at the steel plates shielding the Telefónica building, near Plaza de la Dignidad. The noise is incessant and deafening, but amid the din, a moment of pause emerges: the contemplation of the hundreds of messages written on the wall.
La capucha se transformó en un elemento unificador dentro de la diversidad de los manifestantes. Su uso principal fue ocultar la identidad frente a la policía o las cámaras, pero también adquirió un carácter simbólico al incorporarse en intervenciones artísticas.
Hoods or balaclavas to cover the face became a unifying element among the diverse group of protesters. Their main purpose was to conceal their identity from the police or cameras, but they also took on symbolic meaning when incorporated into artistic interventions.
